Talk to your landlord about a no-cost home energy assessment

Why? Most homes have many opportunities to save energy and money, but it may be hard to decide where to start. You can start saving right away when you ask your landlord to sign up for a home energy assessment.
Benefits to your landlord:

Having a home energy assessment has a variety of benefits for your landlord:

  • Make the rental a more efficient, comfortable and cost-effective place to live for current and future tenants.

  • Promoting recent energy efficiency upgrades can serve as an attractive selling point.

Step by step:

  1. Ask your landlord to contact a Mass Save Energy Specialist at 866-527-7283.

  2. When you schedule an assessment, a certified energy expert will visit your home to search for opportunities to save energy.

  3. The energy expert will complete a visual inspection of your living space, attic, basement, and crawlspaces and perform a number of tests using special diagnostic equipment. The blower door test, for example, measures how much air is leaking out of your home.

  4. The assessment will also include required health and safety tests to ensure the major combustion appliances (e.g., furnace, boiler, hot water tank, stove) are operating properly.

  5. Finally, the energy expert will recommend additional steps you can take to increase your home's efficiency and answer any questions you have.

  6. Through the Mass Save program, National Grid offers no-cost targeted air sealing and will fund 75% (or more) of the cost of approved insulation. Encourage your landlord to get started by taking the online assessment at or by calling 866-527-SAVE
